Failure to Adapt is certainly an interesting name for a business. I nearly didn’t choose it, but I thought after some time that it was the best-worded description of me and what I’ve done. It’s a military term, first of all, and while I haven’t served in the military, I’ve done a great deal of research into it, namely military history.

As I sought a name for the imprint under Last Best Press, this name came along and I instantly felt attached. The actual meaning of the term is to describe a soldier who cannot conform to the way the military does things. If you are in the military, there is a necessity to conform. Once again, I didn’t serve so I don’t mean to speak out of turn. This is only based on my findings.

You see…I haven’t done the best conforming. I’ve spent much of my life in molds set by others and what I felt I should be, but I never enjoyed it. My childhood experiences told me if I acted a certain way, no one would be mad at me and I wouldn’t anger anyone. After a while, that began to deteriorate and I hated who I had become.

In my late twenties, I made an attempt to break away from this mold and the call to conform to what the world says is normal or successful. As a Christ-follower, I am called to not be conformed to the world, but to “be transformed through the renewal of [my] mind, that by testing [I] may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2, ESV).

Rest assured, this is not a “Christian” publishing company, but a publishing company whose owner happens to be one. If you’ve read any of my work, you’d recognize that. But what the name Failure to Adapt means to me is not a story of failure, but a story of wanting to do your own things and be your own person. In that way, I have failed to adapt and am stepping into my own person.
